I remember a time when I had just started out in the dance studio business world and I was furiously setting goals and trying to figure out how many more students I had to enroll to reach my financial obligations. Maybe you’ve been there.

It all seemed like it was going to be so easy. I could do the simple math. I didn’t really need that many more students to feel like I was really going to be successful.

And somehow, it was always just out of reach. I wasn’t reaching my goals, and I wasn’t sure what I was missing.

Setting goals and visualizing success are important, right?

Yup, but that’s just the first step.

For many studio owners, however, that’s as far as they get. They set some goals, and “HOPE.” And it’s not enough. It’s never enough. And, believing that it is enough is what keeps them where they are.

So, what’s missing?

The missing ingredient is what we refer to as PROCESS GOALS.

These goals are more than just benchmarks that you set for yourself to guide you to success. They’re the actual steps that it takes to get there. They answer the question: “Okay, how am I going to do that?”

“None of us got into this business because we were great entrepreneurs first and decided that we’d like to make a lot of money teaching dance.”

You could set the goal to enroll 100 new students this year, but if you don’t have the specifics as to how you’re going to do that, you’re relying on an incomplete goal. It’s not going to get you where you want to be.

The problem that most dance studio owners have is that they’re not sure what the steps in those process goals should be.

Of course they don’t.

None of us got in to this business because we were great entrepreneurs first and decided that we’d like to make a lot of money teaching dance. Most studio owners have only studied business and marketing at a very surface level. We all went in to this with a lot of optimism and “hope” that things would work out.

But . . . hope isn’t a marketing strategy. Hope is great for keeping us motivated, but it’s a lousy basis for setting goals.

Instead we all need to invest the time and money that it takes to learn the BUSINESS of running a studio, not just the art.
